Access and retention: Sharing best practice between Europe and Africa
17-20 Novembr, 2009, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

ethiopia 081

The Access to Success project attempted to discuss widening access to higher education from a comparative standpoint, bridging policy makers and HEIs from both Africa and Europe and encouraging mutual learning. The key challenges that each continent faces in this field was looked at from a development perspective, but also as an eventual means to discuss inter-regional cooperation at both the policy and institutional level.

The first workshop of the project drew explicitly upon the results of the first surveys of the projects, surveys on institutional policies and practices regarding access and retention of students. These surveys specifically targeted institutions across Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa, consisting of

a) questions regarding the universities' basic understanding/definition of access and equity and whether this is an institutional objective
b) questions regarding target groups of students in the access debate
c) policies and actions to promote and enhance access to higher education
d) questions of state/national policies that guide or determine institutional access policies and strategies
e) questions regarding strategies to enhance retention and success of students.

The purpose was to collect a base of information to examine some of the topical issues and practices regarding access to higher education in Europe and a sample of countries in Africa. Case studies and interesting practice will be extracted which will be show-cased at the seminar.

Participation: This workshop targeted university leadership as well as management dealing explicitly with access and retention issues at the university.

A parallel Europe-Africa rectors'/vice-chancellor's dialogue was organised to open the event.

Side visits were made to African Union and the Ethiopian ministry of education.
